Inframe News – Indonesia’s hybrid car market recorded strong growth during the first half of 2026, with sales increasing by around 40% compared with the same period last year. The figure was revealed by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto on August 28. The growth comes as more Indonesian buyers consider electrified vehicles as an alternative to conventional cars.
Airlangga said fluctuations in the prices of non-subsidized fuel have also influenced consumer decisions. With fuel costs changing, buyers are increasingly looking at vehicles that can offer better fuel efficiency. Hybrid technology has become one of the options available to consumers who are not ready to move fully to battery-electric vehicles.
The latest growth is part of a broader expansion of electrified vehicles in Indonesia. Hybrid models combine an internal combustion engine with electric motor technology, allowing the vehicle to use less fuel in certain driving conditions. The technology also does not depend entirely on public charging infrastructure like a fully electric vehicle.
Government officials have linked the increase to growing public awareness of electric-powered transportation. The government is also working to strengthen the domestic automotive ecosystem, including vehicle production, battery manufacturing and local components. These efforts are aimed at increasing domestic value within the growing electrification industry.
The hybrid segment has also been gaining attention at major automotive events across Indonesia. At GIIAS 2026 in Tangerang, Toyota reported that hybrid vehicles accounted for more than half of its orders during the show. Models including the Kijang Innova Hybrid, Veloz Hybrid EV and Yaris Cross Hybrid EV were among the products contributing to the strong demand.
The trend has continued beyond the Jakarta-area market. From January through July 2026, hybrid vehicle sales reached around 50,000 units, representing growth of 43.6% compared with the previous period, according to comments made at GIIAS Surabaya 2026. East Java was also identified as an important automotive market, contributing roughly 9.1% to 9.7% of national vehicle sales.
Toyota remains one of the biggest players in Indonesia’s hybrid market. Its locally assembled hybrid lineup includes the Kijang Innova Zenix Hybrid, Yaris Cross Hybrid and Veloz Hybrid EV, giving customers several options across different vehicle segments. The company is also maintaining a multi-pathway strategy that includes hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles.
Competition is also expanding as more manufacturers introduce hybrid models in Indonesia. Mitsubishi, for example, has introduced the Xforce HEV as its first officially marketed hybrid model in the country. The model was also displayed at GIIAS Surabaya 2026, where visitors could experience the vehicle through a test-drive program.
Monthly sales data shows that demand can still move up and down despite the broader growth. In July 2026, wholesale hybrid deliveries reached 7,769 units, down from 8,218 units in June. Toyota’s Innova Zenix Hybrid remained the best-selling hybrid that month with 2,429 units, followed by the Veloz Hybrid with 2,140 units.
The wider Indonesian automotive market also recorded stronger sales in July. GAIKINDO reported wholesale deliveries of 81,115 vehicles, up 4.5% from June and 33.3% from July 2025, while retail sales reached 77,412 units. At the same time, the government is pushing battery production, local components, B50 biodiesel and other lower-emission energy technologies as part of its transportation strategy.
