Inframe News – Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor best known for playing Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, has died at the age of 85. Cullen died on Wednesday, August 26, at his home in Los Angeles, according to his agent Kevin Motley. His death was reported publicly on August 28, with his family confirming that he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Cullen became the original voice of Optimus Prime when the Transformers animated series launched in 1984. His deep and commanding voice quickly became closely associated with the Autobot leader. He continued playing the character across television, movies and video games for more than four decades.
His connection with Optimus Prime continued when the franchise moved to the big screen. Cullen returned as the voice of the Autobot leader in Michael Bay’s 2007 live-action Transformers movie after more than two decades since the original animated era. He later reprised the role in several sequels, with his final live-action Transformers appearance coming in 2023’s Rise of the Beasts.
Cullen often explained that his performance as Optimus Prime was inspired by his older brother Larry. Larry was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam and became a major influence on Cullen’s interpretation of the character. The actor drew on his brother’s calm and authoritative manner when developing the voice of the Autobot leader.
Beyond Transformers, Cullen had a career spanning hundreds of television, film and voice-acting credits. He provided the voice of Eeyore in numerous Winnie the Pooh productions, beginning with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in 1988. He continued playing the gloomy donkey across later animated projects and films.
Cullen also worked on a wide range of other entertainment projects during his career. His credits included the 1976 King Kong remake, Knight Rider and several animated franchises from the 1980s and 1990s. He also provided the distinctive creature vocal effects for the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film Predator.
The actor began his entertainment career before becoming one of animation’s most recognizable voices. He worked as an announcer and performer on television comedy and variety programs before moving deeper into voice acting. His early animation work included appearances in shows such as The Smurfs, G.I. Joe and Dungeons & Dragons.
Cullen continued working with the Transformers character well into his later years. He voiced Optimus Prime in the Transformers: Prime television series and appeared in multiple Transformers video games and other projects. His performance in Transformers: Prime also earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011.
In 2023, Cullen received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards. The recognition came after decades of work across animation, television, film and video games. His career had accumulated more than 200 acting and voice credits by the time of his death.
Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay. His family said he died peacefully and asked fans to honor his legacy through compassion, integrity and loyalty. The family also highlighted the message associated with Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime: strength could be combined with gentleness.
