Inframe News – Barcelona have completed the signing of Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal on a three-year contract. The move was confirmed on September 1, on the final day of the European summer transfer window. Jesus will remain with Barcelona until June 2029.
The transfer reportedly cost Barcelona around £8.6 million ($11.5 million), although neither club officially disclosed the financial details. The relatively modest fee made the deal one of the more notable late moves of deadline day. Jesus was entering the final year of his Arsenal contract.
Jesus becomes another addition to a rapidly changing Barcelona attack. The Spanish champions had already brought in several players during the summer, including Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri, Joao Cancelo and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. His arrival gives coach Hansi Flick another experienced attacking option.
The Brazilian forward arrives in Spain after four seasons with Arsenal. He joined the London club from Manchester City in 2022 for a reported £45 million and went on to make 123 appearances in all competitions. During that period, he scored 32 goals and provided 22 assists.
Jesus was part of Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning squad last season. He made 14 appearances during the campaign and scored three goals, but his opportunities became increasingly limited as Arsenal strengthened their attacking options.
The 29-year-old had fallen behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres in Arsenal’s attacking pecking order. That situation made a departure increasingly likely during the final weeks of the transfer window. Barcelona eventually stepped in with an opportunity for Jesus to restart his career in La Liga.
Barcelona had originally been interested in Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. However, Atletico were unwilling to negotiate with their domestic rivals, forcing Barcelona to consider alternative options before the transfer deadline. Jesus ultimately became the club’s solution in attack.
Jesus himself acknowledged the Alvarez situation during his presentation in Barcelona. He said he was not offended by being viewed as an alternative and described joining Barcelona as a dream. The Brazilian also said he was ready to work hard and prove his value to the team.
Hansi Flick has also expressed confidence in the new signing. The Barcelona coach said he likes Jesus’ style of play and believes it fits the team’s football. Flick added that the Brazilian could become an important player for Barcelona during the season.
Jesus’ career previously reached its highest point at Manchester City. During six seasons at the club, he made 236 appearances and scored 95 goals, while winning four Premier League titles along with several domestic trophies. He left City for Arsenal in 2022 after establishing himself as an important attacking player under Pep Guardiola.
His time at Arsenal was interrupted by a serious knee injury suffered in January 2025. The injury kept him out for a significant period, although he eventually returned and helped Arsenal during their title-winning campaign. Barcelona’s medical assessment was completed before the transfer was finalized.
The move also marks a new chapter in Jesus’ international career. He has earned 64 caps for Brazil but has not appeared for the national team since November 2023. His performances at Barcelona could now provide another opportunity to return to the Brazil setup.
Barcelona’s decision to sign Jesus adds another experienced forward to a squad undergoing significant changes. The club will now hope that his Premier League experience, movement and ability to play across the front line can strengthen their attack. Jesus is set to begin his Barcelona chapter with a contract running through June 2029.
